The Blyde River Canyon one of the most spectacular scenic areas in Africa the third largest green canyon in the world and a destination not to be missed, the Blyde River Canyon is a place of enormous beauty. Vast quartztic sandstone cliffs dominate the landscape falling away to the depths of the canyon and the Blydepoort dam below. This 22 500ha reserve is one of Mpumalanga’s most accessible tourist attractions and is listed in the top ten must see destinations in South Africa. The reserve conserves several important eco systems, from the highland grasslands on the mist shrouded Drakensberg escarpment to the forested canyon.
This region is also an important water catchment area with several rivers rising on the escarpment above the canyon. The canyon reserve protects a number of rare birds and mammals, including the oribi, the red duiker and the highly endangered blue swallow. Further north, additional places of interest include:
- The sawmilling village of Graskop
- The Pinnacle
- Gods Window
- Berlin waterfalls
- Lisbon waterfalls
- and Bourkes Luck Potholes.
There are several well positioned viewing sites to the north overlooking the canyon, the Blydepoort Dam and the Three Rondevels on the opposite side of the canyon. Sites are easily accessible for all vehicles and offer the option of short walks. Excellent photographic opportunities should not be missed to capture the many moods of the canyon and surrounding mountains. Hiking is undoubtedly the most popular adventure activity in the area.
The Blydepoort Hiking Trails follows the contours across the face of the canyon through indigenous forests and over rivers. Hikers can opt for hikes of varying duration, and make use of several self catering overnight trail huts. Advance bookings are essential to avoid overcrowding on the routes and at camping sites. There is ample commercial accommodation around the canyon offering all manner of facilities. For many years one of South Africa’s first hydro-electric plants was sited in the canyon but this was abandoned due to the insufficient water flow.
