Mpumalanga is nestled on north eastern border of South Africa and shares common borders with Swaziland, Mozambique, Limpopo Province and the Gauteng Province. This province covers 6½% of South Africa’s total landmass. The aptly named Mpumalanga means “place of the rising sun”.
The diverse landscape of this province encompasses the cool high eastern Drakensberg Mountains and the hot, low lying bush of the Greater Kruger National Park area.
The population of Mpumalanga is predominantly SiSwati (Swazi), Shangaan, IsiNdebele, Pedi, English and Afrikaans speaking, allowing for a rich cultural diversity.
In summer, which is the rainy season, the lower lying regions of Mpumalanga may exceed 35° Celsius. Winter temperatures are warm during the day, early mornings and evenings can be cool. The higher Drakensberg Escarpment and adjoining Blyde River Canyon areas are more temperate.
