Augrabies Falls National Park

The Augrabies Falls Conference Centre is part of the Augrabies falls national park main rest camp. Augrabies falls on the Orange River rank among the world’s greatest waterfalls. The name Augrabies, which was given to the falls by the local Khoikhoi people, means hollow place, a place of great noise, and a rocky waterfall and accurately describes the falls. European explores had called the falls King George’s Cataract, or Hercules Falls but the Khoikhoi name has stuck.

Kruger National Park

Your natural heritage

Background

A wildlife paradise teeming with life, the Kruger National Park is the ultimate destination for the tourist seeking indigenous flora, fertile valleys, sub-tropical lowveld vegetation and a diversity of habitat and wildlife.

Kruger was established in 1898 as the Sabie Game Reserve and proclaimed a national park in 1926, making it the oldest national park in South Africa.

Rich in biodiversity, the park stretches for 350 km from south to north along the Mozambican border to where South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe meet at the infamous crooks corner.

Together with Mozambique’s Limpompo National Park and Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou, Kruger now also forms part of the great Limpompo Transfrontier Park – a unique political innovation that created a colossal wilderness area.

Over 1 million visitors per year flock to Kruger to experience close encounters with the wildlife in a natural unfenced environment. Some visitors go there to relax while others want to experience nature in a more spiritual way.

This jewel in the crown of SANPArks is truly all things to all people and the natural heritage of all South Africans.

Special features

Kruger conserves not only natural, but also cultural heritage. There are almost 254 known cultural heritage sites in the Kruger National Park, including nearly 130 recorded rock art sites.

Cultural artefacts of Stone Age man have been found for the period 100 000 to 30 000 years ago and more than 300 archaeological sites, with significant archaeological ruins at Thulamela and Masorini, have been found to date.

Things to Seek:

  • The big five – Buffalo, Elephant, Leopart, Lion and Rhino
  • Birding Big Six – Ground Hornbill, Kori Bustard, Lappet-Faced Vulture, Martial Eagle, Pel’s Fishing Owl and Saddles-bill Stork.
  • Five Trees – Baobab, Fever Tree, Knob Thorn, Marula, Mppane.
  • Natutal/Cultural Features – Letaba Elephant Museum, Jock of the Bushveld Route, Albasini Ruins, Masorini Ruins, Stevenson Hamilton Memorial Librial, Thulamela.

Seasons

The region’s subtropical climate features hot, generally rainy, October to March summers and extremely pleasant April to September witness, with warm dry days and cold nights. Traditionally, the best game viewing is in winter.

During the west season, animals are more widely distributed throughout the park due to plentiful natural water sources, such as pans and flowing rivers, that makes them less restricted to artificial water points closer to roads.

Wildlife

Kruger is one of the premier game-watching destinations is the world. Approximately 148 mammal species occur in the park.

It is possible to see all the classical African big game, including elephant, black and white rhino, hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog and many antelope species.

Large carnivores include lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyena, but there are also many smaller, equally enticing mammal species.

Kruger Park Accommodation facilities

Accommodation facilities in Kruger are grouped in camps scattered throughout the park. Camps are surrounded by electric fences for guest safety. Main camps are linked by tar roads but most roads (tar and gravel) are accessible by normal sedan vehicles.

Most first time visitors choose one of the 12 main camps for their stay as these camps have restaurants, shops, fuel stations and other facilities.

After getting to know the Park better, other more rustic self-catering camps like the bushveld camps are chosen to their exclusivity.

The Kruger National Park boast 12 main rest camps, 5 bushveld camps, 2 bush lodges, 5 satellite camps and 2 sleepover hides – a total of more than 4 5 beds!

It is one of the world’s most popular public entry game parks with more than 1 million visitors per year.

Your natural heritage

Activities the Kruger National Park offers its visitors up close and personal nature experiences with a variety of guided activities. Daily early morning and afternoon guided game walks are availed from most camps.

Day visitors

All main rest camps have day visitors area inside or nearby the rest camp. At the picnic sports visitors can (for a nominal free) hire gas skottels (outdoor elevated frying pans) to cook meals on.

Camps with day visitors area located inside

Berg en Dal, Crocodile Bridge, Lower Sabie, Mopani, Olifants, Pretoriuskop, Punda Maria and Shingwendzi

Camps with day visitor area located outside:

Letaba, Orpen, Satara and Skukuza

There is a maximum threshold of vehicles that can enter the park daily. If this threshold is reached, only visitors with pre-booked overnight accommodation will be permitted access. Such situations tend only to arise in extreme cases such as public holidays and long weekends.

Gate and Travel Times

The maximum speed limit of 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel roads means that travelling times within the park are considerably longer than outside the park. Take note of all the rules and regulations as displayed on the entrance permit pamphlets and on the brown information boards as you enter Kruger. Should you be found in contravention of these rules, you may be liable for a fine.

Remain inside your vehicle and remember to consult the ‘game spotting board’ near reception offices to enhance your game viewing opportunities.

Visitors to the park should take into consideration the distances to and from Kruger and bear in mind they have to arrive at the camp of their choice before gate closing times:

  • 18:00 August to October
  • 18:00 November to February
  • 18:00 March and April
  • 17:30 May to July

Give yourself time to enjoy the nature beauty of Kruger.
