The Kruger National Park boasts a subtropical climate experiencing hot, rainy springs and summers from October to March and warm, pleasant autumn and winters from April through September. Late autumn, winter and early spring form the traditional game viewing season as this is when the bush is at its thinnest and animals gather around waterholes.
The abundance of water in the rainy season has the effect to thinning out the game throughout the park making spotting animals more difficult.
Kruger is considered the premier game-watching destination in Africa and houses 148 naturally occurring mammal species within its borders. Visitors stand a good chance of spotting most of the traditional species of big African game, including elephant, black and white rhino, hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog and many species of antelope.
Large felines include lion, leopard and cheetah and other carnivores including wild dog and spotted hyena as well as an array of much smaller but equally fascinating mammal species.
